"Im
Ready to sign!"
the crowd chants along with Exactus
lead singer and guitarist Breeland Cox during
the final chorus of the quartets tongue-in-cheek jab at the record industry,
"Record Deal." This is just one of the many songs that the eccentric
Charleston, SC- based quartet has masterfully crafted to help them deal with their
place in the world of popular music. "Record Deal" is a smart
assed, quick- witted claim that Exactus is
willing to do almost anything to gain favor among the fickle fans of rock music.
"That pretty much sums it all all up right there," quips Cox. "Weve
decided that if its going to take hair gel, mesh hats and wristbands to
become a viable force in todays music scene then so be it!"
Its
this carefree attitude coupled with songs that refuse to fit any set mold, yet
are still as radio friendly as
say
Justin Timberlake, that makes Exactus
such a special group. "We just want to be huge," interjects Exactus
drummer K-Rock, "Ill put the back
into some old chick if I know shes connected to the industry somehow."
"Absolutely," agrees Mantan,
Exactus 26-years-young-and-balding bass
player. "If there are any record label execs who have an ugly sister or cousin
who need to be pleasured, I will become their sex slave in exchange for a long-term
deal!"
The catch is, even though Exactus
constantly kids about trying to fit a certain image and making it to that elusive
national level, the band has emerged as the most creative and individual band
in the extremely diverse Charleston, SC music scene. Exactus
released their first full-length record, The Trials of Roy (and the High-Flying
Adventures of the Porno Bird), in June of 2003, but the bands live shows
are what has captured the attention of music fans all over the Southeast. Its
not uncommon to see Exactus, who have been
together since 2000, pull zany stunts during live shows, including staging mid-song
arrests of their lead singer, opening up for themselves as different bands and
breaking out the coolest choreographed white-boy dance moves since the heyday
of Vanilla Ice!
Despite their droll disposition, Exactus
long-term goals are serious and common between all four members of the band. "Honestly,
we just want to continue to write good, fun music and have as many people as possible
hear it and hopefully enjoy it," states Cox, As for a "Plan B,"
Cox thoughtfully replies, "If everything doesnt work out for the band,
well just open our own strip club. At least then we can FEEL like rock stars!"
